Is Onimusha: Way of the Sword a Remake?

No. It is a brand-new entry, not a remake, remaster or reboot. Here is how it relates to earlier Onimusha games and what CAPCOM actually said.

The short answer

No, it is not a remake. It is a new entry, not a remake and not a remaster.

CAPCOM’s 2024 announcement calls it the first new Onimusha title in over 20 years. Production material describes a standalone story that reuses the Genma, the Oni Gauntlet and swordplay rather than rebuilding an older plot.

Why it looks familiar

Soul absorption, Oni powers and Issen are series signatures. Historical figures and Japanese dark fantasy are the old recipe too.

All of that means it continues the same design language. It does not mean old visuals were redrawn or old levels rebuilt.

Remake, remaster, reboot, sequel

TermWhat it meansDoes it apply here?
RemakeRebuilding an older story and its levels in a new engineNo. CAPCOM calls it a new title
RemasterRe-releasing an older game with visual or comfort upgradesNo. This is not a re-release
RebootDiscarding old lore and restarting the timelineCAPCOM never said this. Store categories are not evidence
SequelContinuing directly from one older gameNot confirmed officially, so no conclusion

Before you buy

New players can start here without finishing the older games.

Veterans will recognise the vocabulary and combat traditions, but the setting, relationships and combat rhythm are new.

Any specific link between the older games, the Netflix anime and this one needs a source. “It is a direct sequel” without one is just an unconfirmed claim.

Check it yourself

Start with the words “first new title” in CAPCOM’s original announcement, then read the official Characters and Action pages.

A store listing under the Onimusha series proves the franchise, not remake status.
